Outdoor Small Cell
One of the major challenges when deploying Small cells in an outdoor city environment is how to solve the backhaul. If fiber is available at the wanted spot, this is of course a good solution, but this is very seldom the case. That´s why wireless backhaul is in focus, but it also introduces new challenges for microwave. A direct line of sight does not always exist between nodes, and this creates a need for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) microwave backhaul.
Ericsson has proven that MINI-LINK in traditional frequency band outperforms traditional NLOS solutions. In a city environment, the macro base station in typically placed on a rooftop. In order to enhance end user performance, the small cells are placed closer to the street level. This sets new demands on small cell equipment design to melt in to the street environment, in order to make it easier for the operators to get permission to install the sites.
This app supports the discussion on how to solve the backhaul using NLOS microwave, and gives several site examples in city environments
